Jacobus Johannis van Broekhoven

Jacobus Johannis van Broekhoven (1867-1930) was an influential Dutch Spiritualist and author who, as a follower of Elise van Calcar’s version of Spiritualism, believed in Spiritualism as a divine revelation.  In 1913, he founded the magazine Stemmen uit Hooger Wereld which was discontinued when he died.

For his tireless work for “spirit”, he came to be known as the “Apostle of Spiritualism”.  For many years, Van Broekhoven served as a board member of the Dutch Spiritualist Society “Harmonia” and as a result of his inspiration the annual “Landdagen” (country days) for all Harmonia members were organized.

The archives of the Dutch Spiritualist Society "Harmonia" (Archive (HUA)) include records relating to J.J. van Broekhoven.

The preliminary biographical sketch for this entry relating to the history of Spiritualism in the Netherlands was kindly provided by Mrs. Loes Modderman in December 2013.
