Name in Dutch: Studievereniging der Psychical Research
The Dutch Society for Psychical Research was founded in 1920. There was a conscious decision to use the same acronym as the original English SPR, but with the Dutch translation of the word “society”. One of the founders was the Dutch neurologist Israel Zeehandelaar (1878-1932). Gerardus Heymans (1857-1930), philosopher and founder of psychology in The Netherlands, was the first president.
Beginning in 1921, the society’s journal Meededelingen der SPR (Bulletin of the SPR) was published irregularly. The first issue contained the article about the famous telepathy experiment conducted by Heymans and Brugmans with the subject A. van Dam. In 1928 the journal’s name changed to Tijdschrift voor Parapsychologie (Journal of Parapsychology) and in 2008 to Tijdschrift voor Parapsychologie en Bewustzijnsonderzoek (Journal of Parapsychology and Consciousness Research).
Each Spring the society organizes a Parapsychology Day (Dag van de Parapsychologie) for its members and others interested in parapsychology.
