Welcome to the African Traditional Medicine Research Institute (ATMRI), the first such organization to be established for physicians, researchers, and students worldwide.
Mission: To promote interest in, and research on, African Traditional Medicine (ATM); To make the benefits of ATM available to the people of the world; To preserve the indigenous and traditional knowledge rights and benefits of the local African people, especially in relation to ATM; To promote the establishment of branches of the ATMRI at other medical research centers in the United States, and around the world;
Membership open to: All physicians, researchers, students, faculty, and others who interested in African Traditional Medicine (ATM) and the promotion of research on ATM.
Objectives:
1. Identify all ATM herbal recipes, medicinal plants, or other traditional therapies that have ever been used for the treatment of any disease or disorder in any country of Africa.
2. To create a database of African Traditional Medicine recipes, medicinal plants, and other therapies so that researchers worldwide can do research on these therapies to determine their effectiveness, specify optimum formulations, and do other beneficial research related to ATM.
3. To identify and create a bibliography of all books and articles published anywhere in the world on African Traditional Medicine, medicinal plants, and related therapies.
4. To identify all African bio-medical periodicals and journals that are currently being published, and that have been published in the past, but are no longer being published.
5. To translate all of the titles of the articles in the above journals into English, French, and other languages as necessary, and make a title, author, and subject index, so that researchers worldwide can see what biomedical research has been published in African biomedical journals and other periodicals on African Traditional Medicine.
6. To create a mechanism whereby articles related to African Traditional Medicine and published in African biomedical journals, can be easily obtained obtained by anyone, especially in countries of Africa;
7. For collaboration purposes, to identify all people, medical schools, universities, government agencies, research organizations, societies, and other organizations in Africa and elsewhere in the world with an interest in promoting the importance of and doing research on African Traditional Medicine;
8. To establish a journal to enable researchers worldwide to publish their research related to African Traditional Medicine; Proposed title: Journal for African Traditional Medicine Research (JATMR)
8. To establish a newsletter to report the activities of the ATMRI and its members.
9. To establish an indigenous and traditional knowledge rights protocol, agreed upon by local people and national governments for the preservation of the rights and benefits of African people and cultures in relation to African Traditional Medicine;
